Morning Skincare Routine: Using Salicylic Acid And Niacinamide Serum
Step 1 – Cleanser:
Get your favourite gentle cleanser. I particularly love CeraVe cream to foam cleanser or Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser. Dispense pea size onto your palm and apply on wet skin. Gently massage the cleanser all over your face for 30-60 seconds. Rinse and pat dry
Step 2 – SALICYLIC ACID:
This can be toner, essence or serum. Products like Paula’s Choice 2% BHA or CosRx
Blackhead Power liquid is amazing. Shake well before using this product. If you are using a toner, dampen the cotton pad with toner and apply it. Take care not to oversoak the cotton pad. If you using a serum, 2-3 drops is enough. Apply all over your face and neck. If in liquid, 5-8 drops is enough. Do not rinse.
Step 3 – NIACINAMIDE SERUM:
This can be in a light serum or sticky serum. Products like Inkey list niacinamide serum, good molecules niacinamide or The Ordinary niacinamide + zinc serum. You can move on to apply niacinamide serum by waiting 30 secs for the salicylic acid to sink in. For sticky niacinamide serum, you can use 2-3 drops and 3-4 drops of light serum. Apply all over your face and neck. Do not rinse.
Step 4 – SUNSCREEN:
If you have oily skin, you might want to skip moisturizer and move on to apply your sunscreen. Use lightweight sunscreen like CeraVe ultra-light moisturizing lotion with SPF or CosRx Aloe soothing SPF 50. Take about half a teaspoon or 2 fingertips and apply all over your face and neck. Do not rinse
Evening Skincare Routine
Your evening skincare routine with your morning skincare routine would look the same except for sunscreen. If your cleanser is not able to remove your sunscreen and makeup. I suggest you double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser and your regular cleanser.
Then continue with salicylic acid and niacinamide serum. You can stop your nighttime routine after adding niacinamide serum or a lightweight moisturizer
Note: Always read the specifications and directions on products well before use
2. Salicylic Acid and Hyaluronic Acid: The Perfect Pair
Hyaluronic acid is a must-have when using salicylic acid, especially if youβre concerned about dryness or irritation. Salicylic acid can sometimes be drying, so pairing it with a hydrating ingredient like hyaluronic acid helps to keep your skin plump and moisturized. Hyaluronic acid works by attracting moisture from the environment into your skin, ensuring it stays hydrated even when using potent active ingredients.
How to Use: Just follow the routine above except for now, you are replacing niacinamide with hyaluronic acid. If you have all three, salicylic acid, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid, then you might want to interchange the serum you want to use for your morning and evening skincare routine. You can either use niacinamide in the morning and hyaluronic acid at night or vice versa. Just follow the routine above.
3. Salicylic acid and Alpha Arbutin: Tackling Hyperpigmentation
Salicylic acid and alpha arbutin are a beautiful combination if you are trying to treat hyperpigmentation. Alpha arbutin is a stable derivative of hydroquinone that is less irritating. Salicylic acid and alpha arbutin work well together but should be used cautiously to avoid over-sensitivity to the sun.
How to use: If you are using both in a serum, apply alpha arbutin first as a spot treatment then salicylic acid before applying sunscreen and moisturizer. Or you could either use either of these ingredients in your morning skincare routine and the other at night. Salicylic acid removes dead skin cells while alpha-arbutin evens your skin tone.
4. Salicylic Acid And Vitamin C: A Powerhouse Combo
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that brightens the skin and boosts collagen production. When used together with salicylic acid, it helps to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation left behind by acne. Vitamin C also protects the skin from environmental damage and enhances the overall effectiveness of your skincare routine.
Note: It is important to note that before combining salicylic acid with vitamin C, you should check the strength of the vitamin C and its derivative.
Ascorbic acid is the purest form of vitamin C that is highly potent and can be irritating. If you are using a high-strength ascorbic acid, then you should use one in the morning and the other at night. Both salicylic acid and ascorbic acid can make your skin highly sensitive to the sun.
However, if the vitamin c derivative you have is different from ascorbic acid, you can totally use it in combination with salicylic acid in the same routine. Read more on vitamin c derivatives here

Step 3 – vitamin c serum:
Apply 1-2 drops of vitamin c serum over your face. Do not rinse.
STEP 4 – SUNSCREEN:
Take half a teaspoon of SPF 30 or greater. Apply all over your face and neck. Do not rinse
Evening Skincare Routine
Your evening skincare routine is pretty much the same. If your regular cleanser is not able to remove your sunscreen and makeup, then you can double-cleanse with a cleansing balm or cleansing oil and follow up with a face moisturizer. Read more about double cleansing.
5. Salicylic Acid And Ceramide
Ceramides are lipids that naturally occur in the skin and play a crucial role in maintaining the skinβs barrier. Using salicylic acid can sometimes compromise your skin barrier, leading to sensitivity or irritation. Pairing salicylic acid with ceramides helps to restore and strengthen the barrier, keeping your skin healthy and resilient.
How to Use: Incorporate a ceramide-rich moisturizer into your routine after applying salicylic acid. This will help seal in moisture and protect your skin from potential irritation.
6. Salicylic Acid And Retinol
Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is another potent ingredient that can complement salicylic acid. While salicylic acid works on the surface to exfoliate and clear pores, retinol penetrates deeper into the skin to boost cell turnover and collagen production. Together, they help to reduce acne, improve skin texture, and diminish fine lines.
How to Use: Use salicylic acid in the morning and retinol at night. Since both are potent ingredients, alternating their use helps to avoid irritation and allows your skin to benefit from both.

Important To Note Before Layering Salicylic Acid
Before layering other ingredients with salicylic acid, you should start slowly and gently. Use a pea-sized amount of each ingredient on your face. In addition, do a patch test to avoid irritation.
If you are just beginning to use salicylic acid, I wrote a whole blog post on how to start. Read the beginner’s guide to using salicylic acid to get started.
