Although skincare products help to clear your skin, there are some habits you can start to get clear skin naturally at home without products. Whether you have acne, hyperpigmentation, dark spots, sun spots, discolouration, dehydration or dry skin, this post is pretty much for you. Of course, there are several skin conditions and they have varying causes but there is one thing they all have in common “Oxidative Stress”
We are living in an era where we encounter different types of internal and external stressors that accumulate over time and affect the skin. And oxidative stress is the biggest of them all, it originates both internally and externally.
In other to reduce oxidative stress, I will be sharing with you 10 tips that can help you get clear skin naturally at home without using products.

1. Get Beauty Sleep
You have heard the phrase “get your beauty sleep”. Sleep really works to clear our skin and here is how. When you have a good well-rested sleep, you find out that your skin looks fresher, smoother, even your hair feels better. All this is because of a hormone called Melatonin. If you are finding it hard to sleep well at night, read our top 10 tips to get good quality sleep at night.
Melatonin is a multi-faceted hormone that helps regulate the circadian rhythm and helps us fall asleep easily, a very effective sleep hormone. Melatonin also plays a significant role on the skin by working as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and contains powerful anti-aging properties. When we sleep, melatonin is busy repairing skin damage caused by the sun, reducing water loss from the skin thereby improving skin elasticity and increasing collagen production. All in all, when you get good sleep, your skin gets better and you age slowly.
How to Do It:
- Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
- Establish a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.
- Create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as reading, meditating, or taking a warm bath, to improve your sleep quality.
2. Have A Good Time
I know life gets really busy and we are stressed most of the time. But don’t forget to take life one day at a time and feel good. Feeling good makes your skin glow and increases the chemical called Oxytocin.
Oxytocin is known as “the feel-good hormone”. Studies from the Dermatology Times show that people with high oxytocin levels have significantly lower age scores meaning “More Youthful Skin”. So take time out to enjoy each other’s company, hug a friend, spend time with friends and family, and go to the beach. Anything you enjoy that makes you happy, do it.

3. Exercise Often
The exercise they say improves your physique and mental outlook, what about the skin? Exercise is known to increase blood circulation and keep the skin healthy and vibrant. It releases toxins and cleanses the skin from the inside out.
As good as exercise is, care must be taken when exercising outdoors. Avoid exercising between the hours of 10 am – and 4 pm. If you have to, then wear your sunscreen. While water intake has weak effects on the skin, it has a really strong effect on your health. Good health is usually reflected on your skin. Therefore, it is still best to take at least one or two litres per day. This will help flush out toxins that are bad for your gut health.
6. Reduce Your Screen Time
The more we are trying to run away from sunlight exposure, the more we are running towards blue light exposure. Research from the Journal of Biomedica has shown that constant exposure to light-emitting from electronic devices can increase reactive oxygen species which in turn cause the skin to age faster.
It is better to get a light filter when using your laptop, phone, or tablet or get that beauty sleep and reduce your screen time by putting your device away.
7. Halt Smoking
Smoking cigarettes does not just affect the health and those around us, it also affects the skin as well. It alters collagen production, increases the rate at which collagen is produced, reduces wound healing and accelerates aging.
8. Airborne Pollution
The impact of airborne pollution has been greatly studied and its effects on human health are detrimental. It is known that outdoor pollution is one of the leading causes of premature deaths worldwide. Its effects on the skin are also not left out.
Skin exposure to airborne particles causes a reduction in antioxidant levels such as vitamin C, E, squalene and the sebum level reduces. It also reduces collagen and elastin levels which cause increased aging.
Studies have shown that people living in polluted areas tend to have more wrinkles, uneven skin tone and drier skin.
9. Maintain A Healthy Gut & Balanced Diet
Try to include food that enriches your gut such as prebiotics and probiotics. These foods are food for your skin and make your skin clear and healthy. Prebiotics are nondigestible carbohydrates that feed the probiotics in the intestine. Examples are artichoke, agave, garlic. onion, asparagus, flaxseed, and soybeans.
Probiotics are live bacteria that confer benefits to the skin. They can be found in yoghurt and kimchi. Both pre and probiotics must work hand in hand for clearer skin.
How to Do It:
- Incorporate plenty of fruits and vegetables into your diet, particularly those rich in vitamins A, C, and E.
- Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds, which can help reduce inflammation and keep your skin moisturized.
- Avoid processed foods, excessive sugar, and unhealthy fats, which can contribute to skin issues like acne and dullness.
10. Don’t Over-Treat Your Face
A lot of people tend to over-treat their skin. Listen to your skin. If you have normal skin, don’t buy skincare for acne or oily skin just because everyone is using it. You are in the best position to know your skin type and your skin condition.
