If you’re searching for a lip product that not only hydrates but also plumps and smooths, the Paula’s Choice Hyaluronic Acid + Peptide Lip Booster might be on your radar. This lip booster claims to offer intense hydration while reducing the appearance of fine lines around the lips. But does it live up to the hype?

I was sent this product by Paula’s Choice PR team in 2023 and I like to take my time before reviewing products. I have been using this product off and on for a year now, coupled with other lip care products but this one stood out for me. Lip care is not something I have spoken much about but this particular one deserves some credit.

About The Lips

The skin on the lips is unlike your face. The lips do not have sebaceous glands protecting them and, hence prone to water loss, which can cause lip dryness. There are several reasons why your lips may be dry. I have written an extensive blog post on 10 reasons why your lips are dry and chapped in case you need it.

In this post, I will only mention the ingredients that stood out for me and why this product works for me.

Paula's Choice Hyaluronic Acid + Peptide Lip Booster Review

What is the Paula’s Choice Hyaluronic Acid + Peptide Lip Booster?

Paula’s Choice is a brand known for its science-backed skincare products, and this lip booster is no exception. The formula combines hyaluronic acid, peptides, and squalane to target dryness, fine lines, and loss of volume in the lips.

Hyaluronic Acid:

A powerful humectant that draws moisture into the skin, helping to plump and hydrate the lips. Hyaluronic acid has a tremendous ability to bind to water to keep your skin moisturized. Hyaluronic acid keeps moisture on your skin.

Peptides:

These are short chains of amino acids that can stimulate collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and smoothness. Peptides are widely available in skincare products. You will find them in moisturizers, serums, sunscreens, lip treatments, eye treatments, neck treatments, you name it. Peptides act by improving the water content on the skin just like hyaluronic acid and glycerin does. But peptides do more than that, they help heal the skin.

Are peptides good for the lips?

Yes, peptides are good for your lips. The type of peptide present in Paula’s Choice Lip Booster is Palmitoyl-tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl-tripeptide-38. Palmitoyl-tripeptide-1 is a type 1 collagen fragment. This type of peptide is called Matrikynes. According to Dermatology Times, “Matrikynes was developed through biomedical research on tissue repair and wound healing”. So the way this ingredient works for your lips is that when your skin is exposed to sunlight, causing your lips to dry, the Palmitoyl-tripeptide-1 boosts moisture to heal the skin.

Palmitoyl-tripeptide-38 is newer, found within collagen VI and protein laminin. These proteins are important for your skin. The manufacturer of this ingredient claims and I quote “boost the production of 6 major components of the skin matrix (collagen I, III, IV, fibronectin, hyaluronic acid and laminin 5)”. The backing behind the claim stems from in-vitro studies.

Squalene:

A moisturizing ingredient that mimics the skin’s natural oils, providing lightweight hydration without feeling greasy. Anytime I use products that contain squalene, I just like the feel and the softness of the product. Maybe it’s just my skin or maybe it’s the squalene.

Packaging and Application

The lip booster comes in a sleek, silver tube with a doe-foot applicator, making it easy to apply directly to the lips. The packaging is compact and travel-friendly, which is always a plus for on-the-go use.

The formula itself is lightweight and non-sticky, absorbing quickly into the lips. It has a smooth texture that glides on effortlessly, leaving a subtle sheen that isn’t too glossy or overpowering.

How Does It Perform?

After using the Paula’s Choice Hyaluronic Acid + Peptide Lip Booster for a few weeks, here’s what I’ve noticed:

  • Hydration: This lip booster delivers on its promise of intense hydration. My lips felt soft and moisturized throughout the day, even after the product had absorbed. Unlike some lip balms that need constant reapplication, this product keeps your lips hydrated for hours.
  • Texture and Feel: The product feels luxurious on the lips. It’s not sticky or greasy, which is a common issue with many lip products. It’s also fragrance-free, making it suitable for those with sensitive skin.
  • Long-Term Benefits: Over time, I noticed that my lips looked healthier and felt smoother, even when I wasn’t wearing the product. The combination of hydrating and anti-aging ingredients seems to have a lasting positive effect.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Intense, long-lasting hydration
  • Lightweight, non-sticky formula
  • Fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin
  • Easy-to-use applicator

Cons:

  • May not provide dramatic plumping if that’s your primary goal
  • Slightly higher price point compared to basic lip balms

Final Verdict

If you’re willing to invest in a quality lip product that offers more than just basic moisture, this lip booster is worth trying. Whether you use it as part of your morning routine or as an overnight treatment, it’s a versatile addition to any skincare regimen.
